Fashion Capitals

Everyone loves to keep up with the latest trends, and what better way to do that then to visit one of the many fashion capitals around the world? The definition is as follows: “A fashion capital is a city which has a major influence on international fashion trends and is a key center for the

fashion industry.” No matter which continent you plan on roaming, there is bound to be a fashion forward city close by. Designers have the greatest opportunities of making it big in the fashion capitals. You can find but only the trendiest of souls in these fashion dominated cities; nothing less than one’s best is to be expected in a fashion capital. The fashion industry is booming and is gradually taking over new cities, one by one. You might notice that all fashion capitals host a “fashion week” every year to debut the latest and greatest trends. Here are just a few of the top fashion capitals in the world.

New York

Sydney Chavez

Sydney Chavez

New York has most definitely earned its spot as the number one fashion capital of the world. As many know, America is a melting pot of cultures and New York is the greatest representation of that. Anyone who wants to become the next big thing tries to make it in the Big Apple. There are so many different types of people, trying to make it in the fashion industry, which we all know is a cutthroat business. There are schools dedicated to fashion and design, such as the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons The New School for Design. Not only is New York the hotspot for designer, it is also a mecca for models. If you want to work with big name designers, New York is definitely the place to start. There are so many world-renowned modeling agencies just in New York City, it will make your head spin. New York is most definitely the end-all be-all of the fashion industry.

Paris

Jolie Adele

Jolie Adele

Home of the Little Black Dress, Paris is by far one of the most popular fashion capitals known to man. The term “High Fashion” or Haute Couture (in French) was coined in Paris. This is how you know Paris means business when it comes to fashion. From this city you should expect simplicity in its fashion. It is home to some of the most famous names in fashion history such as Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Céline, Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Dior, Givenchy, Chloe, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Hermès and Lanvin. Their school for design is the most famous fashion school known to man, the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. Paris is probably the fashion capital of Europe, which is how well known it is for fashion.

London

Sophie Curtis

Sophie Curtis

From this fashion capital you will hear of names such as Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Burberry, and Tom Ford. London brings forth clean cut clothing; no frills are coming from this country. You are most likely to find basic fashions that make the foundation of all trends. Patterns such as plaid and argyle are common in English fashion.

Milan

Prada, Gucci, Dolce and Gabanna, Armani, and Roberto Cavalli are just a few major (household names) designers that made it big in this Italian city. From this fashion capital you should expect lots and lots of detail. Intricate designs and attention to details is what makes Italian fashion so loved, and Milan is a great representative of the country.

Tacky Trends

There are a few trends that I have just never understood. You know the ones that make you question other peoples thought processes. As in, why was this ever a trend? Who in their right mind would ever do this to themselves? Do you enjoy looking like a walking disaster? Just a few questions that haunt me from time to time.

Colored Contacts

Stanton Optics

Stanton Optics

We all know that your eyes are not naturally that color… I can see the plastic coating on your pupil, you are not fooling anyone. Colored contacts are just downright tacky and unnatural. Plus, if you have a problem with sight, then it does not make sense to use contacts other than the clear ones. You should embrace your natural eye color.

Inappropriate piercings/tattoos
Basically dermal piercings are the bane of my existence, like do you really need to pierce the dimples of your back or your middle finger? I don’t think so. It is so trashy and tasteless. And don’t get me started on tattoos, because there is a right and wrong way to do that. Tramp stamps are a no go, EVER. People that choose to cover a good portion of their bodies in tattoos also disgust me. Seriously what are you trying to hide under there?

Fake Tan/Nails
If you have one there is a good chance you have the other. If an operation has the term “fake”

Big Mouth Earle

Big Mouth Earle

anywhere by it, it probably is not a good idea to get it done. If you come out of the tanning salon looking like a ripe tangerine, you need to reevaluate your spending habits and possibly your life. Orange is not a skin color, so stop it. And if on top of your fake tan you have 3 inch fake nails, please rip them off. They are beyond tacky and I cannot fathom how you manage to get anything accomplished with them on.

Ombre
I am so over this trend it is not even funny. I swear this was a cool trend when it first became big, but now its just looks like you don’t keep up with your root touch ups. I really think its time for a new hair trend, because this one has gone on for way to long. Ombre, you have overstayed your welcome.

Lip Liner

Chinae

Chinae

This isn’t the 90’s could you please get out of here? Lip liner is a sin and so unattractive. It draws attention to your lips, but not the way you want. Your lips don’t looks big, just ugly. Stop it now.

Tracksuits

Style Sizzle

Style Sizzle

You know those velour ones from Juicy that EVERYONE was obsessed with in Middle School. Not going to lie, I did own a matching pair, but I totally regret it now. Tracksuits are not even as comfortable as they look, I much rather throw on a pair of baggy sweatpants and sweatshirt.

Crocs
No. Just no. These are the ugliest things I have ever seen in my life. I don’t care how comfortable they

Zinto

may be, or whatever other excuse you need to tell yourself to make it seem okay to wear them, because its not. This is the biggest fashion no-no that I know of, because they are unacceptable on every level. I literally cannot come up with an appropriate reason to wear them, but that is probably because there is not one.

We like to forget about how much we put our skin and bodies through during daily wear and tear. I am here to suggest some beauty prep tips to help you get closer to a healthy, beautiful look.

Hydration

In order to maintain healthy skin, we need to start from the inside, out. Drink lots and lots of water. This is no joke; our bodies cannot function at full

capacity with out it. If you do not stay hydrated, our bodies tend to let us know, you will start to notice your skin looking dry and brittle, which is not cute. Drinking more that enough water every day (over 8 glasses) also helps keep away skin blemishes, such as acne. Water helps flush away the toxins in our bodies which is often why we tend to break out, especially after eating greasy and sugary foods. That type of build up in the body takes a toll on us, so it is vital to stay hydrated.

Not only does our skin need hydration, so does our hair. The sulfates in shampoo and conditioner strip the oils of our hair, leaving hair thirsting for hydration. There are many ways to combat dry hair such as: leave in conditioners, hair masks, and hot oil treatments. My personal favorite method of hair hydration is the hot oil treatment. You can do this at home; all you need is any sort natural oil, such as olive or almond oil for example. You heat up a little amount of oil in the microwave to a favorable temperature, then dip your hands in the oil and gently massage the scalp until the entire head is drenched in oil. Leave the oil in overnight and shower the next morning, making sure to get most of the oil out so you are not rocking a greasy scalp. Your hair should look and feel healthy after this. This process is good to do at least once a month to maintain shiny hair.

Exfoliation

Dwhitney Emanuel

Dwhitney Emanuel

Exfoliation is a key step towards smooth skin. It rubs off all of the dead skin, dirt and oils from your skin and lets through a fresh layer of skin.

Rachael Pontillo

Rachael Pontillo

Exfoliation is great because it helps keep away skin blemish and acne by freeing your skin of dirt and oily buildup. Smooth skin is the most satisfying feeling and can be more easily obtained through exfoliation.

Not only should you exfoliate your skin, but also your lips. You can do this by rubbing you lips with a warm washcloth, wet toothbrush, or sugar scrub. This helps rub off dead skin from the lips, revealing soft smooth lips that were hidden underneath. Layer on a bit of lip balm and your lips will be left with lasting softness.

Moisturization

Just as we need to hydrate from within, we must also hydrate skin externally. Drinking water can only do so much, so it is best to use lotions or oils to put moisture back into the skin. I know in the winter skin becomes especially dry, so before you go out, make sure to moisturize your face and body, because dry skin in the cold HURTS. To lock in

moisture it is best to apply lotions right after showering. I personally love Garnier Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-Crème for my face because it is so light, you won’t even notice you are wearing it. As for body lotion, I am obsessed with Vaseline Coco Butter lotion because it’s ultra hydrating and leaves skin feeling smooth for hours on end.

Maintenance
It is really important to keep up with good and healthy skin habits. Make sure that you are keeping up with the hydration, exfoliation, and Moisturization regimen. And don’t forget other habits such as

taking off all make-up before bed, because that prematurely destroys and damages skin more that it looks. Working out and sweating your toxins also helps purify the skin, so don’t forget to bring in at least a few extra steps a day. Healthy habits reveal healthy skin.

Timeless Trends

Timeless trends are exactly that, timeless. There are a handful of classic garments and accessories that will just never go out of style no matter what. These styles include: the LBD (little black dress), fitted trousers, pencil skirt, trench coat, white blouse, nude pumps, flats, pearls, and a simple, mid-

sized clutch. What makes these styles so classic would have to be their simplicity and versatility. Each of these garments can be either dressed up or down depending on the occasion, which is so great because these pieces can be worn numerous amount of times and look different every time. The beauty of timeless garments is that they create timeless outfits; all of the pieces can be paired with one another to create a superior look.

So lets break down the garments and accessories based on necessity. First of all, every girl needs a little black dress; you honestly just cannot do without one. A little black dress is great for absolutely any occasion, ranging from wedding to funeral (yes I just went there.) It is so perfect because the color is simple and works well with every skin tone. Not only does it flatter all skin tones, the little black dress is flattering to all shapes. Black is a very slimming color, and if you choose the right cut, you could look a lot more slender. Not to mention, the youthfulness it also presents. Plus, if you want to dress it up, all you have to do is wear statement accessories, such as a bold necklace, or long/dangly earrings. You are even dress up the little black dress with make up! Throw on a Smokey eye and nude lips, or black eyeliner and red-hot lips, and your look is complete. This can also be applied to many of the other timeless garments as well.

Most timeless pieces work so well together, that it is nearly impossible to go wrong wearing more than one timeless garment. As for the white blouse, you can pair that with your fitted trousers or pencil skirt. All you have to do is pair your nude pumps and pearl jewelry to polish off each of the looks. If you aren’t feeling the pumps (or the way they squish your toes) you can always switch to neutral tone flats, so you do not forget you have options. To carry your everyday necessities, such as your phone, lip-gloss, and nail file, make sure you are not caught without a midsize clutch. They are simple and go perfectly with every outfit without throwing off the balance of your look. The versatility of these garments and accessories are what have attracted women over time for so long. They are far from trashy and can glam up any look you are going for.

These styles will remain for years to come, just as they have lasted up until now. These looks are not going anywhere, and if anything new garments and accessories are being created to add to timeless trends. No matter what, these styles will forever withstand the sands of time.

Fur Real

Fur. Fur. Fur. I LOVE fur. Fur coats, vests, headbands, I am obsessed with it all. It is so fashionably mutli-purposeful; garments range from fur coats, to jackets, to shoes and accessories. The fashion possibilities are endless. But along with the many purposes, there also comes controversy. There is huge debate over

whether wearing fur is ethical or not. And there is great animosity towards those who do choose to wear and support the fur garment industry, but I am here to say that I am pro- fur clothing and accessories.

Our ancestors did it so why cant we? Made from the hide of soft animals, fur is the most ancient form of clothing that exists. The use of fur has been dated as far back as to the times of Neanderthals. It is so warm and comfortable, which is why cave people looked to animal hides during the cold. One of the greatest reasons fur is preferred by many is because of its long lasting wear. Fur garments can last decades and are often kept as family heirlooms.

Fur garments have an air of glamour to them, which is why they are so viable in the fashion industry. Particularly those with wealth, such as royalty, celebrities and socialites, are often found wearing fur. But that is not to say that the average person cannot afford fur garments, since they come in a variety of prices, typically depending on type and rarity.  Basically, the more rare an animal is, the more expensive the hide will be. But animals that produce rapidly, such as rabbits, the fur will tend to be “cheaper.” This is not to say that quality fur won’t still come with a hefty price. Most furs start around upwards of $500 and can be as high as the thousands. The most expensive fur comes from the Sable, which is found in Russia.

There is a mutual relationship between fur trappers and consumers; they depend on us just as much as we depend on them. Some people devote their lives

to capture and raise/breed animals until they are ready to be made into garments. This is where controversy ensues; because animal rights activists believe that hunting is unethical.

In my opinion, I don’t think it’s a big deal since most people eat meat and wear leather belts and own leather couches. And no one seems to care about that, but when it comes down to the “cute” animals, there is a problem. I feel as though only vegans have the right to advocate against the use of fur because they advocate against the use of all animal (by)products.

Typically all parts of the animal are used when making fur garments, if not for fashion then for science and medicine. Animals are constantly being used to test new medications and some of their body parts are actually used as an ingredient in medications.

Even if you are not interested in the use of real fur there is an alternative, faux fur. So it is not like you are missing out on the luxury of wearing a fur garment. Also, the positive side to wearing faux fur is that it is far cheaper than real fur. You can find a faux fur coat for upwards of $100.

No matter what the fur is so relevant and the fur industry will continue to thrive for years to come.

Child’s Play

Everyone in the fashion industry knows that the older you are, the less time your career will last; this is especially true for modeling. Models typically start at a younger age because the lifetime of their career is so short. It’s not to say you get less beautiful as you age, but if you wish to pursue a career in the fashion industry then you should know that time really is of the essence. Young models have always been in demand but recently it has caused

Paris Vogue

Paris Vogue

some uproar with the general public. The topic of age has really caused a stir in our society today. This is especially pertinent to Thylane Lena-Rose Loubry Blondeau, a 12-year-old up and coming fashion model.

Paris Vogue

Paris Vogue

Daughter of professional soccer player, Patrick Blondeau, and fashion designer Veronika Loubry, Thylane is taking the world by storm but not necessarily in a good way. The main problem that a majority of society has with Thylane is the possibility of her young age being extorted. Relatively recently (circa 2011) there has been uproar over the racy pictures of then 10-year-old French model Thylane Blondeau, done by Vogue Magazine. The magazine depicted the young girl in a more mature fashion choice, posing as if she were an adult. In some photos she is wearing a low cut dress with high heels or smearing lipstick on her face, which is why everyone has got there panties in a twist. But since when does dressing up make you an adult? At what age do we set the age limit? And how young is too young?

In my opinion, the Paris Vogue editorial, along with Thylane’s other photo shoots are not over sexualized and shouldn’t be seen as such because it is high fashion. This is the demand they have in the fashion industry. No matter how old a model is, he/she will always be criticized for one thing or Thylane-Loubry-Blondeau-Controversial-Pictures-41another.  If it isn’t her age, it will be her weight, or over emphasis on a facial feature. The public likes to criticize, but not think about her situation in context. She is a MODEL. Models do what they are told to sell products. She has the look that will get this done and does it in a tasteful way, which is why she was chosen to model in such a certain fashion.tumblr_lura67aRDU1r4icago1_500

I really don’t think that Thylane is doing anything wrong by posing for these pictures. I believe that her photos have/are being misinterpreted and blown out of proportion. Since when is it wrong for a child to dress up and pose for pictures? Most “regular” kids do it and it is seen as cute, so why is it so different for this girl? I think that her photos are being taken out of context because they are being seen at such a large scheme. The Fashion Industry is always

looking for young and youthful models, so people shouldn’t be shocked when they see a young boy or girl posing for high fashion. High fashion is supposed to provoke conversation, and attract attention, which is exactly what has happened in this young girl’s situation. Although it may not have been positive, Vogue has certainly caused a stir. Overall, I think that Thylane Blondeau is so gorgeous, has so much  potential and will go very far as a high fashion model.

Doll Face

This weeks post might seem a little bit weird to you since I am slightly deviating away from my typical topics. I want to spice things up and write about one of

the most unreal (pun intended) fashion icons out there; Barbie. Although she may be made of plastic, her fashion sense is completely real. I know, I definitely sound like a crazy woman talking about the fashion sense of a girly play toy, but Barbie is too hot of a commodity to not discuss. Her fashion sense and choices have greatly influenced little girls from all over, including myself.

The idea of the Barbie doll came from husband-wife duo, Elliot and Ruth Handler. They wanted to find a way for their daughter, Barbara, to play with actual dolls rather than paper ones. The two were inspired by the German comic-turned-doll, Bild Lilli. Bild Lilli, the predecessor of the Barbie doll, was Barbie before there was a Barbie. Bild Lilli was an original fashion doll icon created by the O&M Hausser Company, which was bought out by the Handlers shortly before introducing the Barbie doll to the public. She was named Barbie after the Handler’s daughter Barbara, hence the name Barbie. Barbie was officially introduced at the 1959 American International Toy Fair in New York, and thus the fashion doll boomed in the toy market.

anything; her versatility is what made her so attractive to youth. Barbie was created to be a role model for young girls; she is beautiful and confident. The Barbie doll was a way to show girls that there are so many options in life, and you can be anything that you want if you put your mind to it. It was best said by Ruth Handler: “My whole philosophy of Barbie was that through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be, Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices.” Barbie claims over 125 different occupational roles, from Malibu Barbie, to Astronaut, to Nurse Barbie; the career possibilities are endless for her. Along with her myriad career paths came her numerous trendy ensembles.

Barbie has implemented the idea of fashion into girls at a young age. She reflects the general public as a whole, since her styles evolve with the changing times. Her impeccable sense of fashion is a reflection of certain time periods and eras; Barbie changes just as we do. Her style transformed as the time passed, moving from the Mod era in the 60’s to the Malibu era in the 70’s and changing as time moved forward. No matter what time period, Barbie rocked the latest fashion trends, even wearing similar trends found on the runway at a given time period. Standing at only 11.5 inches tall, the Barbie doll has created a huge impact on they way girls view and express fashion. Her style evolution

has directly influenced fashion, as we know it. Barbie will only continue to progress in popularity as time goes on.

Flawless Faces

All right, so this week we are going to talk about one of my most favorite things on this very planet: MAKEUP. I’m sure you all remember being little girls,

dabbling in your mother’s makeup, coming out with lipstick smeared across your face. But who cares it was fun then and it is most definitely fun now! It is also the best/easiest way to perk up a face without having to get certain amount of sleep or drink a certain amount of water. Makeup is magic; it enhances/transforms a person into a more beautiful version of themselves. Makeup lets us exaggerate our mood and express ourselves.

Makeup rule of thumb: a little goes a long way. Seriously. Nothing in the world is worse than a caked up face… you do not want to come out looking like Ronald McDonald. Looking natural is key to looking beautiful. Remember, makeup is an enhancer, not a doctor; you cannot alter your face that much. Basically, the simpler the make up, the more attractive you appear, because the look being achieved creates a youthful complexion. Another thing to remember is balance. If you are planning on going heavier on the eye make up, make sure to tone it down with a neutral toned lip color. Same goes for the other way around, if you are planning on wearing a bright lip color, simple eye makeup is the best way to

finish off your look. Following the guidelines of simplicity and balance, your look should be as close to flawless as possible.

Steps to applying makeup:

  • Prep face
    • Exfoliate

    • Moisturize
    • Conceal any flaws: redness/ dark spots
    • Apply foundation
    • Contour face
    • Apply mascara
    • Add a little color to the lips and cheeks

Contouring is vital when applying makeup; it is the act of defining and highlighting the face to create more structure. You typically highlight the areas of your face where the sun would naturally hit, and shade in the areas that do not, with bronzer. This creates the effect of a slimmer, more defined face. Celebrities do this all the time because it really creates a natural looking face. A well-defined face is a beautiful face. After contouring it is best to add a little “flush” to the face, by adding a warm blush on the apples of the cheeks and a similar color as the blush, to your lips. This tiny pop of color will create an effortless glow to make anyone jealous.

One item I personally cannot live with out is mascara. It livens up a face in a matter of minutes and creates a look of youthful innocence. It is for sure my “secret

weapon” because no one can turn down a little girl that bats her lashes! You honestly do not have to wear anything else, because mascara creates a brighter look to your face. Its quick appliance makes mascara such a beloved beauty tool. So if you are on the run, just grab your mascara wand and go!

Make up is an art; it is a great way to express your individuality and uniqueness. It is most definitely is a confidence booster, which is why it is so used. We all like to feel a little pretty and the best way to feel good is to look good as well. SO next time you apply makeup, be sure to take these tips into consideration,

because they are the key to a flawless face!

Designer Diva: Victoria Beckham

Posh – Adjective: elegant or stylishly luxurious. That is what former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham was/is called, and describes her exactly to the T. Designer, model, singer, and mother, Victoria Beckham is such an inspiration in the fashion industry. Known for her striking beauty and poker face, Victoria Beckham has rose to success in many aspects. In the eyes of many, she is the QUEEN of high fashion. Victoria Beckham has an amazing sense of style and an eye for fashion.

Victoria was raised in a relatively wealthy upbringing; her parents were owners of a wholesale electronics company. Victoria grew up in Hertfordshire County, England. She lived a very comfortable lifestyle because of this. She decided at a young age that she wanted to pursue a life in the music business- thus she became a very successful member of the very famous girl group, the Spice Girls. After the notorious girl group broke up, Victoria started dabbling into the world of fashion, and her success took right off. She has modeled for famous designers such as Maria Grachvogel, Marc Jacobs, Roberto Cavalli, Armani and Dolce and Gabbana in the past. But still she yearned for more; Victoria entered into the realm of design.

In, 2004, Victoria had a collaborative jean, skirt and knits collection with famous brand, Rock and Republic. Later, she decided that she wanted more than just a “line” in a brand and started her own fashion line. She debuted her own fashion line, Victoria Beckham, in September of 2008, which was a gigantic success. In 2011, she created a secondary line under her Victoria Beckham collection, known simply as Victoria. Her signature style revolves around the idea of neat fitting; clothing that looks effortlessly put together. Structure and simplicity is key to her fashion empire.

Styles you should expect:

–       Oversized sunglasses

–       Sky high heels

–       Statement Pieces

–       Sleek pants

–       Body contouring fits

–       Clean cut dresses

With high fashion, comes high price. If you plan on buying one of her signature styles, be sure to have a stacked wallet, because NOTHING is cheap. But know that for the amount you are going to dish out, you will get high quality merchandise. Quality is of the utmost importance to the Victoria Beckham Brand. It could even be known as the foundation of her empire.
